OUT NOW: Art in Motion (ZKM Karlsruhe)

I am happy and excited to finally see the catalogue for “Art in Motion” being published. The large-scale media art anthology exhibition took place at ZKM Karlsruhe in 2018/19 and travelled to the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning in 2023 (where it was part of the exhibition “Topologies of the Real”) and was curated by Peter Weibel and Siegfried Zielinski, in collaboration with Daria Mille and Judith Bihr, as well as Zhang Ga for the Shenzen implementation.

The work on the catalogue Art in Motion – 100 Masterpieces With and Through Media (Cologne: König), edited by Siegfried Zielinski and Peter Weibel, was sadly interrupted by Peter’s untimely passing in March 2023. Along with ZKM’s wonderful publication department, Siegfried took over the task to finish assembling and editing this comprehensive volume. I tried to help when I could and also, earlier in the project, contributed a couple of texts framing some of the exhibited works and artefacts in art, science, and technology – a weird time travel revisiting those texts I have written now some years back:

(w. Anita Jóri:) “Institut Scientifique de Recherche Paranaturaliste, 1972, Louis Bec”

“Apple I, 1976, Steve Wozniak”

“Telehor, 1919, Dénes von Mihály”

“Project of Music for Magnetic Tape: Imaginary Landscape No. 5, 1952/53, John Cage”

To paraphrase from the curatorial statement: The exhibition showcased the evolution of media art through key apparatus-based masterpieces, featuring photography, sound art, Fluxus, and contemporary collaborative practices, among other positions, techniques, and protagonists.

Information on the exhibition can be found here; see here for the catalogue.
