Taken from the volume’s preface:

On the 25thanniversary of its founding, researchers from the world over gathered at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) and its sibling institution, the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM), and over the course of several days transformed it into a Potential Space in which to gauge the manifold futures of research and education in art and design. As it was at its founding, the crucial gesture on this anniversary was not retrospective but prospective. The conference Potential Spaces (February 16–18, 2017) supplied a provisional framework for the momentary aggregation of diverse perspectives from the arts, aesthetics, media theory, philosophy, pedagogy and critical theory, a frame capacious enough for each perspective to unfold in its own complexity. For, rather than dictate a new metanarrative for research and education in the context of a globality constructed in the West, the object here was to harness the synergies and dissonances among the variable positions in these various disciplines, methods and cultural contexts and to hold them in productive tension.

The volume comes with contributions by Hans Belting, Irgit Rogoff, Angela Harutyunyan, Kamal Aljafari, Miklós Peternák, Tsong-Zung Chang, Gao Shiming, Rakhee Balaram, Nikos Papastergiadis, Ebadur Rahman and Siegfried Zielinski.
